Celebrating Diversity

June serves as a reminder for Americans to come together and celebrate diversity — it’s Pride Month and Monday was Juneteenth. Yet, it feels like our country is more divided (and hostile) than ever.

Personally, I can barely watch the news without being triggered. My partner and I are hesitant to attend a Pride festival because we don’t want to be statistics in a not-so-random act of violence.

But this week, a friend renewed my faith in humanity by sharing a YouTube video with me. It’s sometimes hard to put feelings into words, and this diverse dance troop’s performance absolutely nailed it. My heart says it might impact you deeply, too. Just make sure you have some tissues handy before you click play.

In their words, “Our abilities aren’t hindered because of our differences. Our talents aren’t any less because we are unique. Our worth isn’t defined by our diversity.

It is not our differences that divide us — it is our inability to recognize, accept, embrace, and celebrate those differences.

There’s nothing wrong with you. There’s something wrong with the village.

So, how do we change the village?

It starts with us as individuals.

  • We can choose kindness over hostility, empathy instead of judgment, and acceptance over rejection.
  • We can make friends with people who are different from us instead of assuming we already know their stories and won’t have anything in common.
  • We can call or write our political representatives to voice our concerns over discriminatory laws.
  • We can spend our dollars with minority-owned businesses and companies that openly champion diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Yes, we can’t control the political climate, but we can control our actions. Something as small as smiling at a stranger who’s different than you (or sharing a YouTube video) can make a big difference.

So, don’t be shy. I’d love to hear how you’re celebrating diversity and empowering others this month.

Sending gratitude and love your way,

Danielle
